How to measure your space for an awning quote

Three measurements and a few photos are all we need to start. Here's how to take them, and what we check on site.

A good quote starts with a few honest numbers. You don't need to be exact (we always measure properly on site before anything is made), but rough figures and some photos let us suggest the right system and give you a realistic idea of what's involved.

The three measurements that matter

1. Width. Measure along the wall where the awning would be fixed, from one end of the area you want covered to the other. If there's a door, window or pillar in the way, note where it sits.

2. Depth (projection). How far out from the wall should the shade reach? Measure from the wall to the edge of where you sit, eat or work. For seating areas, add a little extra: in the late afternoon the sun comes in low, and the shade moves.

3. Mounting height. Measure from the ground to the highest point on the wall you could fix to, usually just under the eaves, a slab edge or a beam. This sets how much pitch we can give the awning, and the pitch decides how well it sheds rain.

Take these photos

  • The whole wall, standing back far enough to see the full width.
  • The fixing area up close, so we can see what it's made of (block, concrete, steel or timber).
  • Anything in the way: gutters, lights, AC units, window frames.
  • The view from where you'll sit, ideally at the time of day the sun bothers you most.

What we check on site

When we visit, we confirm the measurements and check the things photos can't show: how solid the wall is, where the cables and pipes run, how water drains, and how the sun actually tracks across the space. Then we recommend a system, and the finishes, before anything is fabricated.
